I missed it. I didn’t get hoopla surrounding the Lebron saga. In the larger scheme of things, is this important? I wasn’t really interested in where he went, in the first place, but I thought he would stay in Cleveland.
I had just led a discussion of Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird.” And I had just a conversation about freedom with Shawna and Allayna. We discussed building horizontal structures. I was thinking about Oakland.
I remembered the Lebron thing once I got in my car. As a sports fan, I wanted to know: Did Lebron leave?
He did.
Lebron, Wade and Bosh. Three young, intelligent and talented Black men decided to work together. I love it. I love what it could mean. I’m more excited about this than I was the election of Obama. The only thing that would have made it better, for me personally, is if they would have signed with Charlotte.
They are willing to face the world together. They are sacrificing some money and fame. They’re sacrificing some ego. They’re doing it all to achieve a goal. They surveyed the land and decided they would rather be together. They chose their company. They’re moving on.
What if this works? Will more of us say, “Man, if we stick together …”? Will we start seeing other acts of solidarity? I hope so. We need it.
